Moonee Ponds makes an impact

Our Moonee Ponds clinic opened in March 2003, and has been a resounding success. It is our most fully comprehensive diagnostic clinic, located only meters from the Moonee Ponds Junction.
The clinic provides all general x-ray services. In addition, we offer MRI 1.5 Tesla and Multislice CT procedures for patients.
Our Moonee Ponds clinic is modern and offers both doctors and patients alike, the most advanced technology available, all provided in a caring and professional environment.
With ample parking at the rear of the building and public transport directly at the front of the clinic, accessibility for patients is not an obstacle.
FMIG has made a significant impact in the area, resulting in an ever growing and loyal referral base.

Meeting the Challenge

To consistently meet the growing needs and demands of the medical industry, FMIG encounters this challenge by upgrading its technology and in-house training on a regular basis.
FMIG's Footscray clinic has recently updated both its CT and Ultrasound machines to maintain the highest standard of service possible to doctors and patients located in the Western suburbs.
The new machines increase patient comfort and provide optimum information. Using a minimal amount of radiation, with shorter scanning times and faster image reconstruction for a more advanced diagnosis.

Breast MRI Available at FMIG Moonee Ponds Aids in the Early Detection of Breast Cancer

Breast MRI is growing in prominence for early detection of breast cancer for women with a family history of the disease. There are clear indications that Breast MRI is a viable option for Doctors in breast screening and diagnosis.
FMIG currently is at the forefront of breast MRI diagnosis for young women and women with the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA.
In the past accessibility to MRI procedures has been limited, however FMIG is offering this highly specialized service 5 days a week at our Moonee Ponds clinic.

MRI Technique – What’s involved?

  • FMIG’s 1.5 Tesla MRI is specifically equipped with a dedicated breast diagnostic coil, breast biopsy coil and Computer Aided Detection (CAD).

The CAD is a diagnostic station, which serves two important functions:

  • Diagnostic device – Highlights cancers, through a specific diagnostic criteria evaluation.
  • Interventional device – Ensures biopsy accuracy, 95-100% sensitivity for invasive cancer as opposed to mammography and ultrasound which yield 80-85% sensitivity.

These instruments ensure that MRI does not lead to a high rate of unnecessary biopsies – for false positive findings and allows for the reduction of diagnostic errors made with mammography for high risk patients.

Indications – Why and When to refer for MRI?

  • High risk screening
  • Continued surveillance / scar evaluation
  • MRI Staging – Before & / or after breast conservation therapy
  • Response to neoadjuvant chemo
  • Axillary metastasis of unknown primary
  • Obscured breast tissue abnormalities, not visible by mammography – due to implants and ruptures

Benefits for the Patient

  • No radiation reduces the accumulative effects of mammography radiation exposure, particularly over long screening periods. MRI can achieve views in any plane from any orientation as opposed to mammography requiring reorientation of the breast and mammography system for each view desired.
  • A complimentary diagnostic tool to mammography and ultrasound used for further investigation of breast cancer of young women, with dense glandular breast tissue.
  • FMIG is a fully equipped facility with specific MRI breast biopsy coil and CAD stations to ensure patients are provided with a full diagnostic service by qualified and experienced Radiologists in a safe environment.

New Service Available – Autologous Blood Injection

This procedure involves injecting your own blood into your tendons to try and heal them.  Autologous blood injection (ABI) into tendons is a relatively new technique, which has been used successfully in pilot studies in Australia, America and Europe and has already been utilised by many elite sporting bodies in these countries.

ABI’s involve taking some of your own blood and immediately reinjecting it into one of your tendons.  Tendons commonly injected include the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, hamstrings tendons and common extensor and flexor tendons about the elbow (tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow).  It is also used in the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

The injected blood works by stimulating the release of healing factors that are usually released when we cut or injure ourselves.  It also works by the mechanical division of the tendon fibres which is how some surgery is performed.
